Breath of the Dragon

Jun is a twin separated from his brother and mother by the Snake Wall that separates their country. He wants to be the next Dragon Guardian which requires him to win a fighting competition. He’s single-minded in what he wants and thinks little of anyone else—at first.

During his journey to get to the there and during the competition he connects with new and old friends. He learns a lot about himself and the world in which he lives.

The fantasy elements come out during the fight scenes. Everyone has different gifts and some “special people” even have scales marking them as such.

I liked the martial arts focus and the fight scenes were fabulous. Ren is the love interest but there really wasn’t any romance. She held her own and had her own storyline. My favorite secondary character was his nemesis from his old fighting school - I loved seeing how their relationship grew.

🦎Holding a baby alligator at the Miccosukee Indian Village in Florida and learning about their culture was super cool
🐀A wild opossum I’ve nicknamed Mort pilfers food - he’s super shy and thank goodness he gets along with our cat 🐈
🍲I tried Vegetable Mei Fun - a new favorite

What the Woods Took by Courtney Gould

This is a beautiful, horrifying story about teens lost in a forest full of monsters.

The teens all had issues with their parents or trauma/abuse in their past and were there to undergo some intensive wilderness therapy. The monsters use this to their advantage. Yet, in-between attacks, the teens begin to heal. I love how they learned to trust each other as they banded together to fight a common enemy. It reminded me of the Dakota Fanning movie Watchers.

The forest monsters were unique, shapeshifting, and horrifying. Some seemed to be smarter than others. They all had the same weakness that the teens learned to use against them. There were some twists and not everyone survived, but overall, I was satisfied with the ending. The book was a lot of fun to read.
